Born into royalty as Nunnally vi Britannia, daughter of Emperor Charles zi Britannia and Marianne vi Britannia, Nunnally was 87th in line of succession. After her mother's assassination, she was paralysed by bullet wounds and went blind, apparently due to psychological trauma. Lelouch believes she may be able to see again someday. Following the confrontation between Lelouch and the Emperor about their mother's murder, both were exiled to Japan as political prisoners. They lived at the Kururugi residence where Nunnally first met Suzaku Kururugi. Novels reveal she privately had a terrible time coping, throwing tantrums and destroying nearly anything she could get her hands on when left alone. After Britannia invaded Japan, Lelouch hid their identity and changed their surname to Lamperouge. They sought help from Marianne's old allies, the Ashford family, who kept their identity secret and allowed them to live in a building on campus to accommodate her disabilities. In the second season, Nunnally appears as a Britannian princess and the new Viceroy of Area 11. She still remembers Lelouch as her older brother but is unaware of his identity as Zero. She vowed to continue Princess Euphemia's will by reinstating the Special Administrative Region in Japan. After Kallen Stadtfeld was captured, Nunnally had her transferred to a better facility and gave her a dress. She noticed Suzaku lying about Lelouch to protect her. During a meeting on redeveloping ghettos, she confronted Miss Lohmeyer about burdens on the Eleven population, insisting the plan be rewritten. During the second battle of Tokyo, Nunnally was seemingly killed when caught in the blast radius of Nina's F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb, fired unwillingly by Suzaku compelled by Lelouch's Geass command 'to live'. However, she was revealed alive, having taken a different ship, and boarded Schneizel's floating fortress Damocles. She declared herself an enemy of Lelouch and Suzaku, supported by Schneizel as rightful heir, though Schneizel manipulated her. She insisted on being given the F.L.E.I.J.A. launch button to personally atone for her brother's sins. When Lelouch reached the Damocles, Nunnally dropped the launch key and was thrown from her wheelchair. She broke Charles' Geass with her own willpower and returned to her wheelchair. When Lelouch came for the key, she opened her eyes and asked if he would use his Geass on her. Lelouch used it after she explained she intended to turn the Damocles into a symbol of hatred to unite everyone—a near-duplicate of his own plan. He forced her to relinquish the key, telling her he does and will always love her. After realizing what occurred, unaware of his kind words, Nunnally called Lelouch a demon. Two months later, when Suzaku masquerading as Zero killed Lelouch, Nunnally took his hand and immediately understood Lelouch and Suzaku's plan, realizing the truth as her brother died. She cried hysterically holding his lifeless body as the crowd cheered Zero. Following Lelouch's death, Nunnally ascended the throne as the Empress of Britannia, with Suzaku (as Zero) and a Geass-compelled Schneizel by her side.
