The awakening is not merely physical but ideological. Lelouch vi Britannia, an exiled Britannian prince and son of Emperor Charles zi Britannia, vows to his Japanese friend Suzaku Kururugi that he will one day obliterate Britannia as an act of vengeance against his father. Lelouch rejects Suzaku's path of internal reform within the military, choosing instead to lead an external war. This divergence creates the tragic duality that drives much of the series' emotional weight, as both friends seek justice through opposing methods.

In Their Own Story

Seven years after being sent as political pawns to Japan, Lelouch, now under the alias of Lelouch Lamperouge, is a popular yet withdrawn student at Ashford Academy. He becomes involved in a terrorist attack and finds a mysterious girl known only as C.C., who saves Lelouch's life from the Britannian Royal Guard by making a contract with him and granting Lelouch a power known as Geass. This power, also known as the "Power of Kings," allows him to command anyone to do whatever he wants, including bending their will to live, fight, or die for him. Lelouch decides to use his Geass to find his mother's murderers, destroy the Britannian Empire, and create a better world where Nunnally can live happily. In the process, Lelouch becomes Zero, a masked vigilante and the leader of the resistance group known as the Black Knights in the rebellion against Britannia's tyranny.

He adopts the persona of Zero, donning a distinctive white mask and black uniform to hide his identity from friends like Suzaku Kururugi. This calculated anonymity allows him to operate safely within Ashford Academy while secretly organizing resistance cells against Area 11's brutal occupation forces. The awakening culminates in his first public appearance as a symbol of hope for the oppressed Japanese people. By challenging high-ranking nobles and exposing military corruption through tactical brilliance, he galvanizes scattered dissenters into a cohesive movement known as the Black Knights. This foundational period establishes the central conflict between Lelouch's strategic external rebellion and Suzaku's internal reform efforts within the Britannian military hierarchy, setting the stage for their lifelong ideological struggle.
